Sister Genevieve Ann (Roseanna Hillgen) Sister Genevieve Ann (Roseanna Hillgen), 94, a native of Dufur (Oregon), died on January 25, 2003. She was born in Dufur on February 1, 1908, the middle child of George and Anna Hillgen. She received her elementary and high school education at St. Mary's Academy in The Dalles. She received her B.A. from Holy Names College in Spokane (Washington) and her MED from the University of Washington. She entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of the Holy Names in 1927 and made vows in 1929. She had three "first love" ministries. For the first 46 years of religious life she taught in elementary schools in Portland, Salem, Eugene, The Dalles and Bend in Oregon and Seatlle, Pomeroy and Spokane in Washington. She began her second ministry in 1975 preparing students in the GED program which granted students, ages 18 to over 70, the equivalence of high school diplomas. This ministry was sponsored by Portland Community College at its Inner City Center in St. Andrews Parish. As director, she was not only involved in teaching but in securing volunteer tutors and books for the students. Her third ministry was to work as an advocate with the Portland Archdiocesan Marriage Tribunal. With the encouragement and support of Rev. Bertram Griffin she attended workshops and conferences to prepare herself in helping people to be granted an annulment. She was able to continue this ministry even when she was legally blind. In 1997 she retired to the Provincial House and in 1999 she was admitted into the Marylhurst Care Center due to poor health. She was involved in the Sisters move to Merch Gardens and then back to the Marie Rose Center where she spent the last years of her 73 years in religious life. She is survived by several nieces and cousins and members of her religious community. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on January 31, 2003, at 3 p.m. in the Provincial House Chapel at Marylhurst. Memorials may be made to Holy Names Retirement/Ministry Fund, P.O. Box 411, Marylhurst. Oregon 97036. Written permission to reprint given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon
