He was born Feb. 27, 1923, in Potter Valley, California, the third of seven children to John James and Katherine Margaret (Geibel) Hickey. He grew up and graduated from high school in Ukiah, Calif. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and served in Europe until 1945, as a corpsman and ambulance driver from the front lines to field hospitals. He was at the Battle of the Bulge and the invasion of Normandy. On March 3, 1946, he married Iva E. Prazeau at Marysville, Calif. Together they raised three families including Ralph’s two youngest brothers, three daughters of their own and his youngest brother’s two children. The couple moved to Coos Bay, in 1950, where they lived for 30 years. He worked for and retired from Stampers J&J Tire Company. In 1980, they moved to Arlington, where they purchased the Coast to Coast Hardware Store. Together they operated the store for sixteen years and became friends of the entire community. Ralph was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Lions Club, including being a courier for the eye bank, was named 1994 Arlington Citizen of the Year and for the past seven years was a kindergarten “Lunch Buddy.” He was an avid hunter in younger years and his love of the outdoors continued with a daily walking regime. Many of his happiest hours were spent visiting friends, delivering meals to seniors, and shuttling people back and forth to The Dalles. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Iva; daughters, Ellen, Barbara, Catherine and Mison; son, Lloyd “Bill”; grandchildren, Jason, Scot, Jonathan, Robert, John, SunHye, Sarah, Molly and Alexander; and two great grandchildren, Mitchell and Brittnie. He is also survived by his last remaining brother, Maurice “Jerry” Hickey; foster-son, Bruce Carman, numerous nieces and nephews and friends who loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Katherine Hickey, four brothers, Clyde, John, Clayton and Lloyd, and his only sister, Ellen. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004. Private family graveside services will be held Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at the Arlington Cemetery. Public memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Arlington United Methodist Church. Remembrances may be made to the Arlington Medical Center, the Arlington Volunteer Ambulance Service or charity of choice.
