He was born in a tent on March 28, 1918, in Soper, Okla., to Robert Franklin Herman and Teria Permelia Keller Herman. He grew up on a farm down the road from many of his cousins and across the road from the girl who would later become his wife. When he was 19 he spent some time in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC). On July 24, 1939, he married Beulah Fay Ray. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2004. His family moved to Mosier in 1948, White Salmon in 1962, and Hood River in 1963. He worked at many jobs over the years, however, he truly enjoyed his job as custodian at Whitson Elementary School where he retired in 1981 after 20 years of service. He was an avid gardener. He enjoyed simple pastimes like picnics at Lost Lake and searching for sand dollars on the Oregon Coast. He loved to fish and hunt, once catching a six-foot sturgeon from the banks of the Columbia River near Mosier. He was a member of Hood River Valley Christian Church for 40 years, and served as deacon for many years. He served as part-time custodian for over 30 years and contributed many hours of volunteer work there. He was a past member of Hood River Elks No. 1507 and was a member of Midco Good Sams where he enjoyed camping and serving as wagon master and as chief fire builder. He was a member of the volunteers at Hood River Memorial Hospital since 1990. He was a volunteer at Hospice of the Gorge, Hood River County Museum and a Lifetime member of Hood River Adult Center. He served as transportation director for Boys Scouts of Mosier for two years and co-leader of CYF Group at Mosier Christian Church for two years. Survivors include his wife, Beulah, at home in Hood River; his daughters, Roberta (Bobbi) Reisner, Hood River; Ruby Pantalone, Keizer; Dorothy Herman, Brenda Herman and son James Herman, all of White Salmon; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Feb. 13 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center. Vault interment will be at Idlewild Cemetery with a reception to follow at Hood River Valley Christian Church.
