Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 30, 2006, 12:13 pm The Dalles Chronicle, August 2, 2006 David A. Hazen, 81, a resident of Clackamas and a former resident of The Dalles, died on July 27, 2006. He was born June 11, 1925 in Vancouver, Wash. to Everett and Opal Hazen. After graduation in 1943 from The Dalles High School, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Navy Construction Battalion, (the “Seabees”) in Morocco, North Africa for two years. While serving in Morocco, he met two lady missionaries who made an indelible imprint on his life. Through their influence, he committed his life to obeying God. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a graduate of Multnomah Bible College in Portland, where he met his future wife, Patty Hall. They were married in 1949 and served as missionaries in Morocco until he contracted bulbar and spinal polio. He was paralyzed throughout most of his body and was confined to an iron lung. Eight weeks later he miraculously walked off a plane to greet his family, who had already come home to Portland. He served several years as a representative for Gospel Missionary Union in Kansas City, Mo., where he later also ministered as an associate pastor in a local church. He pastored Cole Community Church in Boise, Geneva Community Church in Bellingham, Wash. and founded Valley Bible Fellowship in Nampa, Idaho. In addition, he founded Blue Ridge Christian School in Kansas City and Cole Valley Christian School in Boise. He considered the schools to be his most significant work. For many years, he and his wife encouraged pastors throughout the Northwest through the ministry with Church Dynamics International. Survivors include his wife, Patty; his children, Barbara Baker and her husband John, and Doug Hazen and his wife Ruth, all of Portland; Mark Hazen and his wife Sue, Chico, Calif. and Chris Young and her husband Don, Boise; 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services are planned at Cole Community Church in Boise at 10 a.m. on Aug. 3 and at Damascus Community Church in Damascus on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. Additional Comments: Written permission to reprint given by The Dalles Chronicle, The Dalles, Oregon, Dan Spatz, Editor (e-mail dated 3/7/2006).
