David Joseph Hazen, 54, who was recently appointed pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wasco, died Saturday at his Wasco residence following a sudden illness. He was born May 15, 1928 in La Grande. Rev. Hazen was appointed to replace the former pastor who died in Ireland, and was in Wasco for only two days prior to his death. He attended St. Edwards' Seminary in Seattle and was ordained as a Catholic priest in The Dalles May 9, 1956. He served as associate pastor in The Dalles, La Grande, Pendleton, Baker, Klamath Falls and Ontario and served as pastor in Vale and Burns before being appointed to the Wasco church position. He was also active the last few years throughout Oregon conducting marriage encounter classes. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Lavina Marie Hazen, Mt. Angel; a sister, Mary Louise Dolan, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and four nephews and one niece. Recitation of the rosary was Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pendleton with the mass of Christian Burial yesterday. Burial was at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
