Hays died of cancer June 25, 2004. He was born Dec. 13, 1918, the second of three sons to Stuart A. Hays and Alice M. (Turner) Hays. In 1937 he left the family farm in Audobon County, Iowa and went west to Washington. He returned to Iowa in 1938 to attend United Engineering school. In 1939 he moved back west to Bremerton. He joined the Navy in 1941 and was injured onboard the USS Wasmuth during a depth charge run in the Pacific. He was discharged in 1942. He worked at the Bremerton Navy Yard before he moved to Seattle, working his way into a management position with Frederick and Nelson. In 1948 he moved to Colfax, Wash. to manage three bankrupt stores in Colfax, Moscow, and Pullman. In 1955 he purchased the Quality shoe store in The Dalles. He renamed the store Sharolds, and for the next 37 years called The Dalles and the Mid- Columbia home. Most of his life was centered around his shoe store. Three of his children worked there as they grew up, and he met his wife of 30 years, Susie, there. His store was noted for its indoor slide. He sold the sold the store in 1989 and started building houses in Dallesport. In 1991 he moved to Bridgeport and built his last house. He loved to cook, ride motorcycles and drive fast cars, and was always building or remodeling a home. Earlier, he enjoyed flying and was a captain in the Civil Air Patrol. He was active in various local organizations including the The Dalles Chamber of Commerce. He fought to remove the parking meters from downtown The Dalles. He liked a good adventure, and at age 71 he and his wife spent two months in an isolated hamlet on the Cam Rahn peninsula in Vietnam. After a triple bypass at age 79 he piled into a van with some of his Hispanic friends for a two-week road trip to the Mexican gulf coast. He is survived by his wife Susie, daughter Tarese, sons Allen, Richard, Roger, Robert and Shaun, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Private cremation was in Wenatchee, Wash. Memorials may be made to Okanagon Home Health and Hospice, 800 S. Jasmine, Suite 2, Omak, Wash. 98841.
