     Jefferson “Jeff” Dee Hayes, 81, a resident of Maupin, died at the local 
hospital Tuesday, April 6, 2004.
     He was born Feb. 19, 1923, in Lone Rock, the oldest of four children to 
Walter Harrison and Phoebe Ann (Wineland) Hayes.
     He was raised in Lone Rock and Condon where he graduated from high 
school. 
     He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then worked as a heavy 
equipment operator in construction traveling throughout the United States. He 
married Sylvia Constance Volden on Nov. 8, 1950 and they settled in the Maupin 
area in the early 60’s, worked for the city of Maupin for several years and 
then worked until his retirement at the Mountain Fir Lumber Company.
     He was a 60-year member of the Elks Lodge and enjoyed the outdoors 
including hunting, fishing, gardening and rodeos. 
     He is survived by five children, Deanna and her husband, Rick 
Stinchfield, Salem; Greg and his wife, Sharon Hayes, Milwaukie; Jeffrey Hayes, 
Maupin; Teri and her husband, Jim Wiltse, Stayton; and Ron and his wife, 
Debbie Hayes, Creswell; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one 
sister, Betty Putnam, Beaverton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia 
Hayes, in April 1993.
     A gathering of family and friends will be held at the family home in 
Maupin, 202 Staats Street, on Saturday, April 10 between 1 and 3 p.m. Private 
cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory and inurnment of cremains 
will be held at Heppner Masonic Cemetery at a later date. Spencer, Libby and 
Powell Funeral Home are in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to 
Southern Wasco County Ambulance, PO Box 125, Maupin, OR 97037.
