He was born May 2, 1942, in Portland, the older of two children to Gordon and Marjarie Alice (Pedersen) Hastings. He was raised in Portland and graduated from Madison High School. After high school, Ron enlisted in the Army in 1961 serving with the military police. In 1967, he was honorably discharged and he moved back to the northwest where he worked on tug boats on the Willamette River, as a longshoreman and for a paper mill. Ron was the union leader representative for the paper mill but later resigned. In 1979, he moved to Mosier to get away from the city atmosphere. From then on, he was a steward of his own land. He was a former member and chairman of the Mosier Water and Soil Conservation District of Wasco County. He enjoyed his family, his property, the annual music festival on his property, drag racing and the outdoors. He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Hastings of Mosier, who he married on Aug. 31, 2001 in Skamania County; two children, Michael Hastings, Tualatin; Michelle Hastings, Portland; four grandchildren; his mother, Marjarie Hastings, Milwaukie, Ore.; and his sister. He was preceded in death by his father. Private family services will be held at a later date. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
