He was born Dec. 28, 1927, in Custer, S.D., one of five children to David R. and Myrtle Irene (Strong) Harris. He grew up in South Dakota and Idaho, graduating from Weiser High School in Idaho. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp, and then returned to Custer, where he married Jeanenne M. Palmer in 1950. They lived back and forth between Custer and Oregon while he worked as a lumber mill sawyer. The family settled in The Dalles in 1960, and he and his brother, Dale, started Harris Janitorial Service, where he worked until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of The Dalles Lion’s Club, the Eagles Lodge, American Legion, The Dalles Country Club, volunteer driver for Link Transport, volunteer with The Dalles Fire Department, captain of his neighborhood watch, and had a local trap shoot named for him. He worked to the very end, always helping others. He enjoyed dancing, mushroom hunting, fishing, golfing, woodcutting, walking, staying busy and especially spending time with his wife and family. He always maintained high spirits, was giving and never complained throughout his lengthy battle with illness, always saying “I feel great!” He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeanenne Harris, his daughters, Cathy Gray, Central Point; Diane K. Fargher, The Dalles; Susanne Harris and Mary Mickley, both of Central Point; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; his brother and his wife, Dale and Bernice Harris, The Dalles; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald and sisters, Irene and Betty. Memorial services will be held at The Dalles Eagles Lodge at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Remembrances may be made to the Celilo Center, 1800 East 19th Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
