She was born Oct. 18, 1926, in Hugoton, Kan., the second of four children to Charlie and Roxie (Schafer) Lease. When she was ten years old, her family moved to the Maupin area where she attended Maupin Grade School and graduated from Maupin High School. She graduated from The Dalles General Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She then worked as a nurse in The Dalles until she became a homemaker and raised her children. In 1973, she went back to work as a nurse at The Dalles Clinic until her retirement in the mid-1990s. She was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and Altar Society and enjoyed flower gardening, yard work, cooking, sewing and was a sports enthusiast. She was a devoted mother and loved being a nurse. She is survived by her husband, Leo E. Hammel, whom she married on August 29, 1948, in The Dalles; her children and their spouses, Neal and Joan Hammel, Vancouver; John and Peggy Hammel, Moscow, Idaho; Bob and Nancy Hammel, Mercedes and Dan Bolton and Mike and Michele Hammel, all of Dufur; 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild, her brother, Jean Lease and wife, Marion, The Dalles; her sisters and their spouses, Ruth and Lee Lindley, Maupin and Charlene and Marion Hatley, Hermiston. She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Jennifer Bolton. Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home from 2 p.m. through the Recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 17. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 18, at The Dalles St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Kelbel as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to St. Alphonsus Altar Society, P.O.
