Surnames: Davenport, Hammond, Krauss, Poe, Robinson Carolyn Marie Hammond, 88, a resident of The Dalles, passed away March 29, 2003, at a local care facility. She was born in Mosier (Oregon) on October 17, 1914, to Hannah and John Davenport, both having been born in The Dalles of pioneer families. She started school in Mosier, but moved with the family to the maternal grandparent's home, George and Carrie Krauss, in The Dalles at the time of her father's death in 9124. She attended schools in The Dalles, and graduated from The Dalles High in 1932. Business college in Portland followed, and she then worked in a law office, returning to The Dalles when married. She married Dale F. Hammond on September 14, 1935, and they resided in The Dalles while raising their family. Both of them were 4-H Leaders, and the entire family was very active in 4-H clubs. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, and participated as church pianist for many years, as well as other areas in the church. For nearly 35 years Carolyn was employed at Wasco Electric Cooperative as office manager, retiring in 1980. She was an active member of many business and professional groups, and did volunteer work at Judson Baptist College (The Dalles) following her retirement. Her interests ranged from crafts and gardening to traveling the United States and foreign countries. She is survived by her daughter and husband, Carita and Hal Poe, Overland Park, Kansas, and her son and wife, Philip and Sandra Hammond, The Dalles; grandchildren including Dale Poe, his wife Holly and children Kailey and Christopher, Chandler, Arizona; Mike Poe and his wife Christy, Lee's Summit, Missouri; Dorene, her husband John Robinson and children Joey and Camille, Olathe, Kansas; Dale Hammond and his wife Kari and children Alexandra and Elliot, Everett, Washington; her sister Florence Davenport, The Dalles, and her brother G. Lewis Davenport and wife, Elma, Vancouver and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband preceded her in death in 1967. Viewing and visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 4, and on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. Services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church chapel starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
