Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 19, 2006, 11:19 pm The Dalles Chronicle, February 7, 2006 John Henry Haggard, 79, a resident of Dallesport, died at his home on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006. He was born in Tillamook, July 8, 1926, the younger of two children to Stephen L. and Hettie Christina (D’Eatley) Haggard. He and his sister, Leona Keller, grew up in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in World War II and Korean War. After his service he became a welder by trade and worked on many of the bridges in the Portland, Vancouver and Seattle area. He enjoyed spending his days with his wife, Dorothy Haggard, whose death preceded his in 2002. Some would say “they were joined at the hip,” as they were inseparable. John and Dorothy bought and sold real estate throughout, Nevada, Washington, Oregon and Arizona, also owning and operating Johns 2nd Hand Store and the Dallesport Auction in the 70’s and early 80’s. Together they also owned and operated apartments and several rental lots. They mostly lived in Dallesport from 1968-2000. Retiring in the late 80’s they were never more than a door away from their daughter, Sheila Erlenbush, Dallesport, allowing them to enjoy more time with their three grandchildren, Christine, Tiffany and Trisha. For further retirement in 2000, they settled in Pahrump, Nev., just out of Las Vegas, spending their days leisurely. He enjoyed watching the five o’clock news, reading true war stories and traveling throughout the state by fifth wheel. He especially enjoyed Canada, the fiddler’s convention in Wieser, Idaho, and the Grand Ol’ Opera. Many nights he could be found at home playing pinochle with his wife and friends, Ron and Jacky Stroud. He enjoyed the debates of politics as he was an avid Democrat. His all time favorite thing was yard sales. If he wasn’t going to one, he was having one. He returned to Dallesport for his final days with his daughter Sheila and his grandchildren. He leaves behind his sister. Leona Keller, San Diego, Calif.; his daughters, Sheila Erlenbush and her husband Scott, Dallesport; and Sharon of, Northfork; four stepchildren, Wanda, Tom, Lennie, Roger and their spouses and children; five grandchildren, Christina, Tiffany, Trisha, Ben and Anthony and other loving family members and friends. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-Quatt Crematory with Smith Callaway Chapel in care of arrangements.
