She was born Jan. 25, 1948 at Lander, Wyo. to Earl and Betty Lou Fossey. Her father worked at various jobs including logging, mining and fishing, but died in a motor vehicle accident when she was 7 years old. The family moved to Boardman when her mother remarried. She attended Riverside High School, graduating as the salutatorian of the class of 1966. Three days later, on June 4, 1966, she married Dennis Gronquist at Hermiston. They lived at Pendleton and Boardman before moving to Arlington 33 years ago. She enjoyed reading, golfing, fishing, camping, playing pinochle and spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed knitting and knitted Christmas stockings for many of the children and adults in the area. She also enjoyed traveling and when she was first diagnosed with cancer she and her husband took frequent trips together. She was a past member of the Arlington School board and budget committee, was a past member of Alpha Nu Sorority and a long time member of St. Francis Catholic Church. She was also a member of the North Central Education Service District board, a position she held until illness forced her to resign. She worked for many years in Arlington as a secretary for the justice court, for Lee Conner at the Texaco bulk plant, for Les Grant Insurance Company and for the last 18 years was employed by Devin Oil Company. Survivors include her husband of over 37 years, Dennis; a son, Kelly Gronquist, both of Arlington; daughter, Megan Proctor, Kennewick, Wash.; grandchildren, Taylor Bauman, Jacob Bauman, Casey Proctor and Juliann Gronquist; brother, Michael Fossey; sister Kathleen Deets, both of Portland. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Arlington Grade School gym. Concluding services and burial will follow at the Arlington Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the newly established Penny Gronquist Scholarship fund through the Arlington branch of the Bank of Eastern Oregon, P.O. Box 38, Arlington, OR 97812; or through the Condon branch of that bank, PO Box 706, Condon, OR 97823. The scholarship will be awarded to graduating seniors from Arlington and Condon high schools. Or contributions may be made to the Pioneer Memorial Hospice, PO Box 9, Heppner, OR 97836. Sweeney Mortuary of Condon is in care of arrangements.
