He was born Dec. 26, 1912, in The Dalles, the youngest of four children to William Otto and Nellie (Gray) Greene. He grew up in The Dalles and attended local schools, graduating from The Dalles High School in 1931, and then attended Business College in Seattle. Upon returning to The Dalles, he was employed by Edward C. Pease Company until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1940. He served five years in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific, Australia and the Philippines. He was discharged in December 1945 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Following his return to The Dalles, he worked for the old Wasco Warehouse Milking Company and its successor, Sunshine Biscuits. He also worked for Stadleman Insurance Company until moving to Portland when he was employed in the finance department of Goodwill Industries. He was married in 1944 to Lorna Jeane Selleck. They were later divorced. Following his retirement, he returned to The Dalles. He enjoyed his time spent outdoors, hunting, camping and exploring little known woods and areas in his Jeep. He also spent time on woodworking projects. Vernon is survived by his nieces, Marcia and her husband, Dane Lacock, The Dalles; his nephew, Jerry Rogers and his wife Pat of Portland; his nephew Willis Greene of Lakewood, Colo.; and his ex-wife Lorna Jeane of The Dalles. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Idus Greene; sisters Nina Palo and Edna Rogers. There will be a gathering of friends and family on Thursday March 3, 2005, at 11 a.m. at IOOF Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road.
