She was born May 3, 1922, in Kenigwalde, Germany, one of two children to Herman and Martha (Lenke) Eckstein. Early in her life, she lost her mother and father. During World War II, she overcame the extreme hardships of being confined to a labor camp in Germany. She married Mick Grabowski on Dec. 28, 1948, in Germany, and they immigrated to Australia in 1950. She traversed through the difficulties of being a non-English speaking immigrant to Australia, and throughout her life she worked hard to help her husband better their situation. In 1977, the couple moved to The Dalles, and she worked at The Dalles Cherry Growers during the harvest seasons. She was a member of Mid-Columbia Senior Center and attended St. Peter’s Catholic Church. After retirement, she continued to commit herself to her family and was a loving wife, mother, grandma and great grandmother. In her latter days, she received care from members of Gateway Presbyterian Church, home visitation nurses, and Hospice. She is survived by her husband, Mick Grabowski; her daughter, Ingrid Fisher and her husband, Bill Fisher, all of The Dalles; grandchildren, Alisa Miller, Aberdeen, S.D., Sarah Fisher, Minneapolis, Minn., and John Fisher, Spokane; great grandson, Caleb Miller, Aberdeen. She was preceded in death by her brother, Herman Eckstein, Jr. of Germany in 1985. Services will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral, 1100 Kelly Ave. Interment will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Gateway Presbyterian Church Deacon’s Fund, P.O. Box 481, The Dalles, OR 97058.
