He was born May 22, 1923 in Spokane to Earl Greenwood and Hazel Opal (Priest) Goetchius. He grew up in the Spokane area and attended Cheney High School. During WWII he served in the U.S. Navy as part of the V12 officers training program and received a medical discharge following the war. He attended St Mary’s College in California who recruited him for their baseball team, Gonzaga University briefly and then graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Economics. The family moved to The Dalles in 1954. He worked for Union Pacific RR as a clerk and watchman for 28 yrs. He never married, and lived at home caring for his parents until their deaths. He was also preceded in death by his younger brother, Jack Burton Goetchius in 1991. He is remembered by his nieces and nephews as being very fun to be around. He sang nonsensical songs to get them to laugh, put raw eggs in his coffee to get a reaction, took them fishing, and taught them to golf with some help from Grandfather Goetchius. His instruction was prized because he was an extremely good golfer. He loved to take the children on picnics and for walks in the sand to look for arrowheads. He loved dogs and always had one. He was a successful steelhead fisherman, and took the children for rides and fishing trips in his boat. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at 3 p.m. at The Dalles First Church of The Nazarene, 1313 Mt. Hood St., with Pastor Randy Johnson presiding. Family graveside services will be held at Greenwood Memorial Terrace in Spokane on Wednesday. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
