He was born Nov. 15, 1929, in Portland, the younger of two children to Orman O. and Velma Lucille (Anthony) Gildow. He was raised in Portland, attended Woodmere Grade School and graduated from Franklin High School in 1947. He went on to Oregon State College, majored in animal husbandry and graduated in 1957. In January 1951 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After the Army he lived and worked in Germany for two years. He served in the Army Reserves in Germany for eight years. Returning from Germany he was Sheriff for Marion County for a year and then began work for Social Security. He transferred several times, including Connecticut, Washington and Oregon. He worked in Salem for many years and then transferred to The Dalles. He married Marian J. Johnson on Nov. 29, 1976 in The Dalles. His interests included beekeeping and swimming at the club. He learned to play the piano when he was 70 years old and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Library Foundation Board. He is survived by his wife of 29 years Marian J. Gildow; three children, Susan Walter, Keizer; Anthony Gildow, Salem; and Matthew Gildow, Keizer; three step-children, Christy and her husband Gregg Smith, Vancouver, Wash.; Jon and his wife Kris Haldorson, Hillsboro; and Curt and Teresa Haldorson, Bellevue, Wash.; nine grandchildren, Melody, Christopher and Robin Smith, Michael and Curtiss Haldorson, Jessica and Lauren Haldorson, Tiffany Walter and Benjamin Gildow and two great grandchildren Peyton and Brayden Foreman. He was preceded in death by his son Bennett Gildow and his brother William Gildow. Memorial services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in The Dalles on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Deane Keller and Pastor Steve Anable officiating. Memorials may be made to Gideons, PO Box 28, The Dalles or The Dalles Wasco County Library Foundation, 722 Court St., The Dalles. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
