He was born March 19, 1918 to Martin Oliver and Daisy Pearl Gholston in Miller, Mo. He moved to Mosier with his family in May 1937. He enlisted in the Army on Dec. 6, 1940, and was sent to the European Theater; where he served for four years. While there, he earned the Silver Star and was wounded in action. He was sent to Paris, France, and London, England, to recuperate for several months, before returning to Fort Lewis, Wash., to complete his recuperation. He was honorably discharged Dec. 31, 1945 He returned to Mosier, where he farmed for a few years, and then went into the grocery business before retiring in 1974. Throughout his life, he was active in his community. He was instrumental in forming The Lion’s Club in Lyle and active in the lodges at Mosier, Hood River, and The Dalles. He enjoyed children, and though he had none of his own, was influential in the character development of many young boys through his work in Scouting and as a Sunday School teacher. He was an avid fisherman, introducing many boys to the joy of fishing He enjoyed travel through a number of states, but also enjoyed researching the natural history of the Columbia River Gorge. He is survived by his wife Elva Lucille Gholston;, his four step-children Donald K. Guier, Omaha, Neb.; Joyce M. Guier, Olympia, Wash.; J. Kathleen Kincaid, Oakville, Wash.; Patricia L. Wilkes, Olympia; eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers Wallace G. Gholston, Portland; Willis L. Gholston, Mosier; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents, older brothers Arley C. Gholston and Charles R. Gholston, and his sisters, Leora M. Julian, Iva H. Beach, and Doris E. Romero. A memorial service will be held at the Mosier Grange Hall, Saturday, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Willamete National Cemetery, Portland. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
