He was born Jan. 17, 1926 in Helena, Mont., to George Joseph and Mary Victoria (Astesana) Geiser and grew up there. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1944, and served with the 390th Bomb Group, 571st Bomber Squadron as an armorer and gunner stationed in London during WWII. Following his military service he returned to Helena in 1946 and worked as a carpenter for several years. He married Otelia Loeken in Helena in 1950; they were later divorced. He moved to Moro in 1951 and served as the Sherman County Sheriff for seven years. Moving to The Dalles in 1958, he owned and operated a service station for several years and also worked for DePriest Farm Equipment before going to work for the Wasco County Road Department. He retired as an equipment maintenance supervisor in 1988. He married Sandra Y. Berkleheimer in Reno, Nev., in 1981 and they made their home in The Dalles until his death. He held a private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying, boating, gardening and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #49 in Grass Valley, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge #303 in The Dalles. During his retirement he did a great deal of carpentry work, including work on the Columbia River Bank’s main office and several of the branches, and volunteered his labor to Habitat for Humanity. In addition to his wife, Sandy, he is survived by several children and stepchildren and their families; son Russell Geiser of Pocatello, Idaho, and stepson John Garrison of Columbus, Ohio; daughter Gloria Geiser-Rodriguez and her husband Ray of Bothell, Wash., stepdaughters Deborah K. James of Richland Wash., and Susan and her husband Monte Meyer of The Dalles. Also surviving are his sisters, Margaret Huxel of Bend, Carol Little of Wellington, Nev., and Katie and her husband Woody Wooderson of Moro and ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank L. Scherrer. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church, the Reverend Todd Unger presiding. Private interment will be in the Moro Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 505 Court Street, The Dalles, OR 97058. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
