He was born Oct. 14, 1927 in Hunter, Ark. to Stanley and Elsie Gaither, the oldest of nine children. He married Beryl Mullins in 1950 and they had three children before moving from Clinton, Mo., to Mosier in 1960. He worked as a carpenter and did construction work on Harvey Aluminum, the John Day, The Dalles and Bonneville dams. They divorced in 1972 and he married Hazel Hall in 1973. They adopted a child in 1976 and lived in the Hoodland area where he owned and operated R&H Saw Sharpening Shop. They moved to Milwaukie in 1993. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as spending time with his family. He is survived by his five children, Roy J. Gaither Jr., The Dalles; Steven L. Gaither, Portland; Brenda S. Gaither-Walther, The Dalles; Ginger C. Gaither, Seattle; and his stepdaughter, Arlett Klein, Milwaukie; two brothers, Bill E. Gaither, Gladstone, Mo.; and Rick W. Gaither, Kansas City, Kan.; a sister, Joyce F. Sweeney, Richmond, Mo.; nine grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren.
