Raymond Earl Jim, a longtime postal employee in The Dalles, and his younger brother Jaime were attempting to launch a boat from the Wasco County side of the Deschutes River at Heritage Landing near the mouth of the Columbia, according to Columbia River Intertribal Fisheries, which investigated the accident. Intertribe Sergeant Mitch Hicks said that while the two were assembling their fishing gear, the boat came loose from its mooring and began to drift with the current. Raymond Jim removed his rain gear and swam after the boat, Hicks said, but began to struggle in the cold water and called for assistance. Jaime Jim swam after him, but also became chilled and had to turn back. Sherman County Sheriff's Department was notified of the incident and a deputy responded to the scene, then contacted Intertribe since tribal fishermen were involved. Also responding was Wasco County Search & Rescue. Hicks said a dive rescue team from the Skamania County Sheriff's Department arrived around 12:45 p.m. and initiated a search for Jim, finding his body at approximately 2:45 p.m. The body was taken to Spencer, Libby & Powell in The Dalles. Services are scheduled Tuesday at 10 a.m. at The Dalles Covenant Christian Community Church. Obituary page A2 February 24, 2003.
