Wakley iwakley@msn.com May 21, 2006, 11:49 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, September 22, 1995 Kenneth Newton Fridley was born Nov. 5, 1912 to Clyde L. and Daisy (Hill) Fridley at the family ranch at Emigrant Springs, Wasco. He died Monday, Sept. 18, at the age of 82. He began school in Emigrant Springs and graduated from Wasco High School, then attended Linfield College, where he graduated in 1935 with a bachelor's degree in history. He taught and coached in Waldsport, Canby and Marshfield (Coos Bay) before returning to the ranch in June 1943. He was a life member of the Oregon Wheat League, serving as president in 1956, and was past master of Masonic Lodge No. 99; grand marshall of the Sherman County Fair in 1975; general manager of the Columbia Ports Traffic Bureau in The Dalles; vice president of The Columbia River Development Association, The Dalles; member of the Oregon State Highway Commission for nine years, to which he was appointed by Gov. Holmes, and twice reappointed by Gov. Hatfield; past chairman of the Sherman County Democratic Central Committee; and a founder and past board member of the Interior Elevator Company. He served on the Sherman County High School board and Sherman County Fair Board, and was a member of the Elks and Moose lodges, and United Methodist Church in Wasco. Survivors include his wife, Alice Anderson Fridley; sons K. Norman, Wasco; Milton H., Tigard; Gene E., Eugene; a daughter, Barbara Adams, Oregon City; a sister, Mrs. Catherine (Dewey) Thomas, Wasco; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death were brothers Ira and Clyde, and sister Inez Wallace. Memorial services will be Saturday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m. in the United Methodist Church, Wasco, the Rev. David White officiating. Memorials: Sherman County Historical Society or the Alzheimer's Association in care of Smith-Callaway Chapel.
