She was born Sept. 15, 1913, in Spokane, to Marion and Jesse Benedict. She married James Benjamin (Ben) Flippin on June 29, 1940. They lived in Roosevelt, Wash. for 37 years where they owned and operated the Arlington/Roosevelt ferry for 31 years (1943 - 1974). They moved to Lyle in 1977. She is probably best known for her love of Columbia River history. She spent many years collecting stories and pictures of happenings along the river and the surrounding area. Active in the Klickitat Historical Society and the Lewis and Clark Trail Commission, she made a history of the Columbia a life- long activity. Sharing her love of the subject, she made many presentations to local organizations on Columbia River history. She had been active in local community organizations such as the Roosevelt Women’s Club, the GF Women’s Club in Arlington, and Lyle, and the Klickitat County Park Board. As a member of the Roosevelt Development Association, Winifred was active in the relocation of Roosevelt, flooded in 1968 due to the building of the John Day Dam. That experience took her to Washington DC in 1968, where her testimony before U.S. House and Senate Committees helped secure federal funding for this relocation project. She also worked with the Washington State Legislature to obtain legislation created to assist communities affected by the dam project along the Columbia River. She was an avid learner. She spent her life learning and perfecting many hobbies. In the spring of 1970, she became interested in printing black and white photos and set up her darkroom in what had formerly been the sewing room for the ladies of the house. She went on to learn not only how to take better black and white photos, but how to print them and then how to copy and restore many of the old damaged historical photos she had been given while interviewing old timers about history on the Columbia. Twenty pictures illustrating boats of different eras on the Columbia River were exhibited in the Maryhill Museum. She is survived by three children: Louise (McAllen, Texas), Jessie (DeKalb, Ill.) and James A. (Jim) Flippin (Everett) and two grandsons, Nolan Benjamin and Gordon Daniel Erdman (DeKalb, Ill.). She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben in 1991 and her only sister, Aurelia Jessie. A memorial service will be held at a later date and a memorial scholarship fund has been established in memory of Ben and Winifred Flippin to benefit graduating students from Arlington High School. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral in care of arrangements.
