He was born Dec. 23, 1915 in Edenwold, Saskatchewan, Canada. His parents, Jacob Flaman and Marie Kissinger, had emigrated from a German farming enclave in what is now Romania to a farming community of German immigrants in Canada. The family moved to the U.S. in 1921 where they farmed in Washington and Oregon state. They settled in Portland where he attended public schools. After completing an apprenticeship program in meat-cutting, he worked for Fred Meyer Grocers until the outbreak of World War II. He was employed during and after the war in the Portland shipyards. He married Emma Lucile Bilyeu on June 27 1938 in Portland. They had a small acreage in Oregon City and then moved to The Dalles in 1947 to begin a partnership with his brother, Robert Flaman. Together the Flaman Brothers operated East Hill Grocery for 25 years and developed Hill Top Grocery in The Dalles and Hiway Grocery in Goldendale. The stores later became known as Sentry Super Markets under the umbrella organization of United Grocers. He served on the board of directors of United Grocers during the 1970s. The Flaman family expanded the business to include interests in another grocery store in Hood River and a shopping center in Portland. He and his wife retired to Sequim in 1980. Survivors include his wife of nearly 60 years, Lucile; two sons, Daniel, Modesto, Calif., and Andrew, Hansville, Wash.; a daughter, Sherrie Flaman Kiefer, Seattle; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Forncrook, Beaverton, and Mildred Huffstutter, Lake Oswego; and a brothr, Lawrence, Waterford, Conn.
