Wakley iwakley@msn.com May 7, 2006, 12:49 pm The Dalles Weekly Reminder, February 23, 1996 Mary Filbin, a resident of Sublimity, died at her home on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 1996, at the age of 94. She was born May 13, 1901, in Edina, Mo., the daughter of Charles and Mary Doyle. She grew up in Roosevelt, Okla., then graduated from Normal School in Sawton, Okla, returning to Roosevelt to teach. She married Walter Joseph Filbin in July 1923 and they came to Oregon in 1936, settling in the Willamette Valley. They moved to The Dalles in 1946 where Walter died in 1954. Mrs. Filbin then moved to the Salem area in 1987 to be near her daughter. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, the VFW Auxiliary, The Dalles Garden Club and participated for years in maintaining the rose gardens at Sorosis Park. She is survived by her son, Charles Filbin of Dufur; daughter Theresa Ekstrand of Turner; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; brother, Charles Doyle of Hobart, Okla.; and one sister Mabel Berry of Los Angeles. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter, son, Patrick Filbin in 1982, and granddaughter, Laurie Usher in 1990. Graveside services were held Saturday, Feb. 17 at St. Peter Cemetery with the Rev. Anselm Finster officiating. Memorials: St. Mary's Academy Foundation in care of Smith Callaway Chapel.
