He was born Nov. 4, 1921 in Bay Creek, Mo., the fifth of 12 children to George Charles and Lusinda Alice (Duncan) Dyer. He grew up in the Ozark hills of Shannon County, Mo., and attended Black Pond School through the fourth grade until quitting to work on his father’s farm during the Great Depression. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Missouri and moved west in 1940 to Sisters, to work in the timber industry. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps and Military Police, stationed in the European Theater. He married Betty June Coffman on Sept. 24, 1946 in Goldendale. After they were married, they lived primarily in The Dalles and he worked for the city of The Dalles most of his working life in the public works. He enjoyed spending time with his family, the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Dyer, The Dalles; his son, George C. and his wife, Lois Dyer, Salem; his daughter, Susie A. and her husband, Larry Townsend, The Dalles; five granddaughters, Kristine Daffron, The Dalles; Jennifer Jones, St. Joseph, Minn.; Kathryn Richmond, Albany; Elizabeth Cummings, Salem; and Emily Dyer-Keating, Kirkland, Wash.; two grandsons, Robert Townsend, Seaside; and Scott Townsend, Keizer; his sister, Virginia Ipock, Kelso, Wash.; his brother Gordon Dyer, Salem; ten great-grandchildren and his sister-in-law, Betty Dyer, Salem. Memorial services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 5, with Associate Pastor Brett Richmond of Albany and Pastor Tim Foster officiating. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
