She was born in The Dalles on April 2, 1928, and was a long-time Wasco County resident and co-owner of the Woodside Ranch on Juniper Flat. She graduated from Maupin High School in 1945, and attended Oregon State College for one year. She was descended from Oregon Trail Pioneers (Kelly and Woodside families) who originally settled in Portland and the Willamette Valley in the late 1840’s, before relocating to southern Wasco County in the 1880’s. She owned and operated the Riverside Hotel in Maupin from 1960-1972, along with her second husband, Charles Lewis “Chauncey” Holmes, who died in 1971. She was well known for her homemade bread, infectious laugh, and hospitable service. She and her husband served as volunteers on the Southern Wasco County ambulance for thirteen years. She was also elected to the Maupin Grade School Board in the early 1970’s. In 1972, she married a widower, Charles E. Dunlap, a Sherman County native, and moved to The Dalles. The couple were members of The Dalles Country Club, where she was an organizer for numerous golf tournaments and events. They traveled widely throughout the United States and Canada in their motor home, sightseeing, golfing, and visiting relatives and friends along the way. In the late 1980s, they relocated to Safford, Ariz., for retirement, where they enjoyed the desert, golf, bridge, and horseback riding. A few months after his death in January 2000 in Safford, she suffered a brain aneurysm and stroke while visiting family in Oregon. She remained in Oregon until her death this New Year’s Eve. She was a long-time athletic and band booster in both Maupin and The Dalles, was an avid golfer and an accomplished horsewoman who rode English, Western, and side saddle competitively in the 1950s. She was actively involved in 4-H as a participant in her youth, and later as a leader of horse and livestock clubs in the Maupin area. She was also a member of the Tywama Saddle Club, and worked for many years to promote the All Indian Rodeo through television spots on local Portland morning talk shows. She also worked in support of 4-H programs at the Wasco County Fair, was secretary of the annual Wheat League Livestock show for many years in The Dalles, and was a member of the Maupin Chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary. All her life, she loved to dance and listen to country music. In her retirement years in Safford, she was president of the local women’s golf association, played bridge, gave horseback riding lessons to local girls, and knitted afghan blankets for children at the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. She also participated in several guided tours of Mexico hosted by instructors at the local Safford Community College. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Holmes, her stepdaughter Teri Dunlap, her son-in-law Dan Bergin, her parents, Lloyd and Dixie Woodside, and her brother, Scott Woodside. She is survived by her daughters, Dixie Bergin and partner Tim Puckett, The Dalles; Margaret Lupi and husband Peter Lupi, Happy Valley; and Molly Holmes and partner Duane Theel, Portland; daughter-in-law, Lou Ann Craft, Bridgeton, Mo.; stepson Larry Dunlap, Calif.; sister-in-law Carlotta Woodside, The Dalles; and sister and brother-in-law Mickey Lou and Herb Snodgrass, Maupin. Arrangements are through Spencer, Libby, & Powell in The Dalles. Graveside memorial will take place at Kelly Cemetery on Juniper Flat in early March.
