He was born Dec. 23, 1929, in Ellensburg, Wash., the fourth of five children to Truman and Nelly (Smith) Dunbar. He was raised in The Spokane Valley, of Washington, moved to Elk, Wash., and graduated from Riverside High School in 1949. After high school, he worked for Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane and then for Sewell Engineering in Ione, Wash. He also worked for Seattle City Light and then for Bonneville Power Administration as a surveyor. He retired after 30 years from BPA and then signed back on for another ten years. He was also the owner and operator of the Rockaway Café in Ione. He met his bride-to-be, Dorthey Ellen Haney at the café, and they were married December 7, 1957 in Ione. He was a member of Moose and Eagles Lodges, president of Bowling Association in The Dalles and in 1988, was inducted into the Oregon Bowling Hall of Fame. He enjoyed spending time with his family, sports with his grandchildren, woodworking, fishing and gardening. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dorthey E. Dunbar, of The Dalles; five children, Terry Dunbar and his wife, Karen; Debra and her husband, Greg Ames; Jeff Dunbar and his wife, Dannie; Kim and her husband, Mark Helyer, all of The Dalles; Kathy and her husband, Mike Mondich, Ione; his sister, Jeannie Buckley, Spokane; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnie and Bud and his sister, Violet. Memorial services will be held at The Dalles Senior Center on Saturday, May 21, at 11 a.m. Cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
