He was born on Feb. 9, 1946, in Vancouver, to Ethel Lilly (Hillman) and Lester Norman Duhrkop. After growing up in Husum and graduating from Columbia High School, he attended Clark College on a wrestling scholarship. On May 1, 1978 in Illwaco, Wash., he married Daravan “Nancy” Jandansan. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and helped to build many of the logging roads within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. He was also a blasting specialist, who worked for Munsen Blasting Company in The Dalles. He also helped build “The Hook” in Hood River. He loved hunting and fishing, and his interest in geology made him somewhat of a rock hound. He was a member of the Elks and Eagles lodges and, as a young man, was an Eagle Scout. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Nancy Duhrkop, Husum; daughters Kathy Morris, BZ Corner, and Leslie Janssen, Portland; stepdaughter Fiona Pynn, Canada; brother Ray Duhrkop, BZ Corner; niece Angela Duhrkop; and two grandsons, Ethan Janssen and John Michael Hatch. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon. Please visit www.gardnerfh.com to send fond memories and well-wishes to the Duhrkop family.
