She was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Grass Valley, the older of two children to Charles William Kenny and Minnie Dell (Wunder) Kenny. She was raised in Sherman County and graduated from Moro High School. She attended the University of Oregon then transferred to Oregon State College, where she graduated with a BS degree in Home Economics in 1940. She married Ray Wilbert Drake on June 14, 1942, at her parents’ home in Sherman County. After her husband’s graduation from Oregon State College in 1943, they moved to Malin, to farm potatoes and hay. She and her children moved to The Dalles in late 1953; she was divorced in 1957. After moving to The Dalles, she opened a kindergarten and child care program in her home and she continued to care for children for 33 years. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, The Dalles First United Methodist Church, the American Association of University Women, PTA, Sherman County Historical Society, Oregon Historical Society, and The Dalles Genealogical Society. She enjoyed listening to Trailblazer games and conservative talk radio programs, gardening, reading, genealogy, and researching and writing about local history. She is survived by five children, Charles W. Drake, Portland; Elinor R., and her husband Joseph LeBaron, Nouakchott, Mauritania (West Africa); Patricia A. Drake and her husband, Daniel Osmon, Clackamas; Robert C. and his wife Pam Drake, Palmer, Alaska; A. Dell Drake, Auburn, Wash.; grandchildren Ray D. Drake, Portland; Petra LeBaron, Washington, D.C.; Robin S. Klinger, Sara N. Klinger, Amber R. Klinger and Hannah E. Drake, all of Palmer; Ryan D. and Devon M. Osmon, Clackamas, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother Lawrence Kenny in 1993. At her request, no funeral or memorial services will be held. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2120 First Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98109 or to The Dalles/Wasco County Library. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at her home later this summer for those who would like to honor her with their stories of her and visit with her children.
