Surnames: Day, Sanderson, Watson John Francis Day, 75, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local hospital on Thursday, April 17, 2003. He was born December 9, 1927, in Rapid City, South Dakota. He grew up in Seneca, South Dakota and Garden Grove, California and graduated from high school in Centralia, Washington. He entered the Merchant Marines then served in the Army during World War II. After the war, he returned to Centralia and went to work for a lumber company. He later moved to Wessington Springs, South Dakota where he married Orva May Sanderson on October 7, 1951. In the late 1950s, he started working as a carpenter in heavy construction and followed the construction of dams throughout the West. He retired in Seattle (Washington) and then moved to The Dalles in June 2002, to be near family. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and the Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed playing and watching baseball, dancing, bowling, scuba diving and cards, especially pinochle. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include his children and their spouses, James Day, Kent, Washington; Janice and Butch Watson, The Dalles; Charles and Anna Day, Cle Elum, Washington, and Jeffrey and Tawni Day, Gig Harbor, Washington; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Orva, in 1998 and his son, Donald Shayne Day, in 1974. Funeral services were held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 19 with Asa Jenson officiating. Private cremation will be held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory.
