Dave, 80, a resident of Murdock, died in The Dalles on Feb. 9, 2004. She was born to Henry Franklin and Violet (Turner) Bailey on Jan. 2, 1924 in Aberdeen, Wash. She grew up in Toledo, Wash. and graduated from high school at the top of her class at the age of 16. During World War II she worked in Portland at the shipyard, painting ships. She met Ralph V. Carstens and they married on April 1, 1944. She then dedicated herself to raising her nine birth children, one adopted child and two stepchildren. They lived and fished in Celilo and ran a small custom fish cannery. He died in 1972 and on Oct. 27, 1972 she married Leonard Dave Sr. in Yakima Valley. They moved to Murdock in 1973 and have made their home there for 31 years. She continued fishing with her husband and also worked as a supervisor at The Dalles Cherry Growers Association. She retired in the early 1990s. She had many interests and hobbies, including crosswords, game shows, flower gardening, picking huckleberries, fishing, hunting and the outdoors. Survivors besides her husband include her daughters, Lynda Tabor, Prosser, Wash.; Karen Swanson, Goldendale; Cheryl Emerson, Dallesport; Joleen Carstens, White Salmon; Marianne Kishwalk, Murdock, and Cindy Carstens, The Dalles; sons, Ralph Carstens, Dallesport; Robert Carstens, Shelton, Wash.; and Richard Carstens, Carson; stepchildren, Dwight Carstens, Vancouver, Wash.; Dorothy Olson, Cathlamet, Wash.; Floria Dave, Yakima; Leonard A. Dave Jr., Dallesport; Randy Dave, Wichita, Kan.; Leon Dave, Diane Dave, Sandy Dave, James Dave and Marie Dave, all of Pendleton; 30 grandchildren and 41 great- grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Ralph Carstens; and a son, John Carstens, who died in 1987. A funeral service was held on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 10 a.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon with burial following at Lyle Balch Cemetery in Lyle.
