He was born Sept. 17, 1920 on the family farm near Silverton to James Oliver and Bertha Mabel (Krenz) Darby. He was a long-time resident of Hermiston and formerly lived in Silverton, Ashwood and The Dalles. He married Irene Augusta Whorton at their family farm in Ashwood. He was working for the railroad when he joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1942 to 1946. He was a Chief Petty Officer for a PT Boat Squadron. After the service, he started farming/ranching and owned a machine shop in The Dalles. He also sold cars and heavy equipment, and worked for Caterpillar. He then moved to Hermiston and started working for the U.S. Forest Service for five years before working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at McNary Dam, where he retired. He and his wife traveled in their RV, continued their love of rock hounding and collecting antiques. He was an active member of the PT Boater Inc, Frontier Collectors Club, Hat Rock Hounds and the American Cattleman Association. His other interests were hunting, fishing, camping and sharing his love and interest of the outdoors with all. Survivors include his wife, Irene, Hermiston; daughter, Joan LaPlant, Hermiston; brothers, Jim Darby, California and Wesley, Merlin and Jerry Darby, all of the Salem area; sister, Jean Nelson, Salem area; granddaughter, Lisa, and her husband, Mark Moore, Hermiston; grandson, Brian LaPlant, Hermiston, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Graveside funeral services will be Thursday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at the Hermiston Cemetery.
