Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 16, 2006, 11:22 pm The Dalles Chronicle, December 7, 2005 Perle Everett Curtiss, 100, a resident of Jefferson and a former residence of The Dalles, died Dec. 5 at a hospital in Albany. He was born near Staples, Minn. and moved with his parents Bowden, N.D. at age 2. He attended rural schools in Kidder County and attended and graduated as valedictorian from Oregon City High School in Mandan, N.D. 1926. He attended several institutions of higher learning, including LaSalle University evening school in Chicago for several years until graduating from their accounting and American law and procedures college, the Law School of New York University, the University of Southern California, Northwest School of Accounting in Seattle, Portland State University and Seattle University. He worked for J. C. Krause, attorney at law, as a secretary for approximately two years in Mandan. He was then employed by the Chicago Relief Fund as an office manager and accountant during the Great Depression. In 1930 he went to Bismark, N.C. and became the chief state auditor for FERA (Federal Emergency Relief Administration). In 1931 he became the Chief Examiner and Accountant in charge of the US Treasury State Accounting Office for the state of North Dakota. He met his sweetheart, Irene Evelyn Cauthers, at a New Year’s Party he held for his office in 1938. They were married at Devils Lake, N.D. on June 7, 1938. After resigning from the US Treasury Department in 1941, he and his family moved to Seattle where he worked for the Glazer Beverage Co. as an accountant. He later was a supervising auditor for R. C. Mouncy and Company. In 1947 they moved to The Dalles and he instituted his own public accounting practice. While living in The Dalles he raised two children, Claudia and Donald. His accounting business also became very successful, having one of the single largest clienteles in the state of Oregon. He sold the practice in 1970 and moved to Newport to retire on the great Pacific Ocean. They lived in Albany and Orem, Utah before moving to Jefferson, where he lived for 3 1/2 years with his granddaughter, Angela Walling. He is survived by his children, Claudia Curtiss, Siletz; and Donald Curtiss, Orem; five grandchildren, Angela Walling, Jefferson; Patrick Curtiss and Lisa Burke, Provo, Utah; and Heather Curtiss and Kimberly Curtiss, Orem; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon Curtiss, Jefferson and Lincoln and Daniel Curtiss, Provo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, on March 2, 2005. Visitation will be at Fisher Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8. Graveside services will be at Willamette Memorial Park at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9.
