She was born May 6, 1917 in Bayfield, Wis. Her maiden name was Southmayd. She moved to Hiles, Wis., in 1927 and relocated to Salem in 1930 and subsequently to Klickitat, where she completed her high school education. She briefly attended Central Normal School in Ellensburg Wash., where she met her future husband Rex Cooke, who preceded her in death on March 1, 2004. They were married for 67 years and moved to Vancouver in 2001 to be near their family. In her younger years, she enjoyed writing, golfing and playing an active role in The Klickitat County Women’s Republican Club. She was also active in the Ladies Aid Society of Grace Lutheran Church. She began her career with J. Neils Lumber Company in 1953, (which later became St. Regis Paper Company and Champion International) where she worked as receptionist and Administrative Assistant to the Purchasing Agent. She retired in 1973 due to failing health. Survivors include her son Gary Cooke and his wife, Svea; her daughters Kathleen Stavney and her husband, L.S. (Bud); and Janet Clarence and her husband, Bud; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Jeanette Caspari, West Allis Wis.; and Patricia Marsh and her husband Wilbur, White Salmon; sister-in-law Nina Bauer, Spokane, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 17 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will be in Mt. View Cemetery in Goldendale. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church in Klickitat.
