The Dalles Chronicle, March 3, 2004
     Rex E. Cooke, 89, of Vancouver, died on Monday, March 1 at his home. 
     He was born into a Kittitas Valley pioneer family on Sept. 14, 1914 at 
Ellensburg.
     He attended schools at Yakima and Ellensburg. He moved to Klickitat and 
was married to Georgia Southmayd in 1936. He worked at J. Neils lumber mill 
later returning to the Kittitas Valley where he was employed as manager of the 
Safeway store in Cle Elum. 
     The family returned to Klickitat in 1950 and he worked in the lumber 
company’s Red and White Store as a clerk. Later he was the manager of J. Neils 
Company store and was purchasing agent for St. Regis lumber when he retired.
     He and his wife moved to Vancouver three years ago to be near their 
daughter.
     He was a member and elder of Grace Lutheran Church in Klickitat. He 
served on the Klickitat Fire Department and enjoyed golf, oil painting and 
gardening. His greatest joy was his family.
     Survivors include his wife Georgia, Vancouver; two daughters, Janet 
Clarence, Vancouver; and Kathleen Stavney, Port Hadlock, Wash.; one son, Gary 
E. Cooke, Sylvania, Ohio; seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a 
sister, Nina Bauer, Spokane.
     Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 6 at 11 a.m. at Mt. View 
Cemetery in Goldendale with memorial services at 1 p.m. at Grace Lutheran 
Church in Klickitat. Pastor Paul Bundschuh will officiate. 
     Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, Southwest 
Hospice in Vancouver or a charity of the donor’s choice.
     Erdman Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
