Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 16, 2006, 11:03 am The Dalles Chronicle, October 3, 2005 Robert “Bob” Fred Colwell, 83, a former resident of The Dalles, died Sept. 22, 2005 in Solvang, Calif., where he was recuperating from a recent surgery. He was born Oct. 1 1921 in Loveland, Colo., and was the third son of a family of six children. He graduated with the class of 1939 in Castle Rock, Colo. The family moved from Colorado to Milton-Freewater, Ore., in the early forties and he joined the United States Marine Corps in 1941. He was stationed in Eniwetok, the Solomon Islands and the Marshall Islands, which were the largest battles of the Pacific. He was discharged as a Sargent with medals as a sharpshooter. He saw action in the Pacific and was a military heavy equipment operator in the Solomon Islands. Upon returning from the war, he married June Stewart of Milton Freewater and the couple soon relocated to The Dalles, where he worked as an operating engineer in construction of The Dalles Dam, 30 years working as a heavy equipment specialist, boat builder and manager of various concrete plants throughout the Mid-Columbia area. Upon retirement in 1984, he enjoyed restoring automobiles and farm equipment. He and June moved to Woodburn, Ore., in 1985. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1995. In the later years of his life, he moved to Kelseyville, Calif., where he enjoyed warmer weather and his continued hobbies. In 2004 he moved to Solvang, Calif., where he lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Nelson Schneider. Bob is survived by his two children, Connie Schneider, Solvang, Calif., and Stephen Colwell, Bend, and 5 grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Neva Mae Hundtoft, Newport, Bettie Sue Japhet, Auburn, Wash., and Bessie Belle Gillock, Long Beach, Wash. Memorial services are being held in Solvang, and family services and internment will be held Oct. 7, 2005 in Santa Rosa, Calif.
