He was born July 7, 1936, in Strong City, Kan., to Vernie and Florence (Lentz) Collins. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at age 17 and retired as a gunnery sergeant after 20 years of service. During his military career he completed three tours in Vietnam. His awards include the Good Conduct Medal with five stars, Vietnam Service Medal with three stars, Air Medal with Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. Other accomplishments include The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Mast, Certificate of Commendation and Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Civil Act with Palm and Frame Color First Class. He married Bernadine “Bonnie” Heathcote in Santa Ana, Calif. on July 1, 1956. He came to The Dalles in 1974 and served as a city police officer for four years before taking employment with Martin Marietta Aluminum. He loved the outdoors, particularly camping and fishing, and was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Bonnie Collins; sons Donald and Ronald Jr.; daughters, Terry Minson and Laura Tingly; mother Florence Shiek; brother John and sister Betty Ann Renk. He also leaves eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Friday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m., at Emmanuel Baptist Church, West 10th Street and Snipes Avenue in The Dalles Oregon. Private interment with military honors, provided by the United States Marine Corps, will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
