She was born June 24, 1929 in Ellis, Kansas, to Bertha Katherine Louise Schepman and William Westphal. Following the death of her parents, she moved to The Dalles to live with her brother, Val, and his wife, Lu, and attended The Dalles High School where she was an honor student and played the drums in the high school Booster Girls Club. Following graduation, she relocated to the Los Angeles area and began working for the State Department of Education where in 1950 she met Les H. Cohen (on the elevator in the state office building) who was working for the State Lands Commission. They married soon after he joined the Air Force and she joined him at Albrook Air Force Base in Panama where she became secretary to the office of Special Investigations-Caribbean Air Command. Eventually moving to Sacramento, she served 14 years as secretary at the Sutter General Hospital Office of Nursing. While in Sacramento, her second daughter Juli donated to her mother a life sustaining kidney, which served her for the 11 years until her death. She fought her last illness for six months. Favorite activities included stitching crafts. She also was a superb seamstress. She and her husband renewed their marriage vows this year on their anniversary July 3 at Kaiser Roseville Hospital. Sylvan Oaks Christian Church Pastor Craig Whitney performed the ceremony. She is survived by her husband of 54 years; two daughters, Vicki Ortiz and Julie and her husband, Dwayne Ayres; four grandsons, Kyle, Casey, Matthew and Nathan; sisters Odetta Hawkins and Avalon Moll; and a brother, Val Westphal. A second brother, Verne, preceded her in death. At her request, no services will be held, but a celebration of her life was held in late July. Memorials may be sent to UCD Transplant Center, 2315 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.
