Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 28, 2006, 6:45 pm The Dalles Chronicle, July 5, 2006 Meredith I. “Merry” Clarke, 81, died June 30, 2006, at her home in Irrigon. She was born Aug. 17, 1924 in Page, N.D. to parents, Floyd and Laura Green Rintoul. She was raised and attended school in Page. She then joined the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II from 1944 until her honorable discharge in 1946. She married John Clarke on Jan. 2, 1946 in Bremerton, Wash. They lived in Highwood, Mont. from 1948 until 1955 when they moved to Fergus, Mont. They owned and operated a cattle ranch in Fergus until 1977 when they moved to the Wamic-Tygh Valley area. They moved to Irrigon in 1994 and have lived there since. She enjoyed flowers, painting, needlework, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, John Clarke, Irrigon; daughters Barbara Tye, Bozeman, Mont.; Addie Calbick, Irrigon; and April Borders, Yankton, S.D.; son Alec Clarke, Whitehall, Mont.; sister Gladys Davis, Page; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. At her request there will be no service. Those who wish may make contributions in her memory to a charity of their choice. Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in care of arrangements.
