Churchill, 80, a resident of The Dalles, died Sunday, May 8, 2005 at the local hospital. He was born March 24, 1925, in Park Rapids, Minn., to William and Edith (Peitz) Churchill. During World War II, he served with the 82nd Airborne in Central Europe and the Rhineland, earning the Eastern Theater Ribbon with two bronze battle stars. Following his military service he returned home and worked for and retired from Peter Kiewit & Sons as a drilling and blasting superintendent. He had worked on projects including The Dalles Dam, Cougar Reservoir, John Day Dam and several others in the San Francisco Bay area. He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife Evelyn Churchill, The Dalles; sisters Lila Buehner, The Dalles; and Fran Julian of Truman, Minn.; five children, four stepchildren, 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In accordance with his wishes, the family will observe private ceremonies of remembrance in conjunction with the placement of his ashes at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
