Wakley iwakley@msn.com April 16, 2006, 10:32 pm The Dalles Chronicle, November 10, 2005 Donald “Don” Lewis Christilaw, 82, a resident of Sandy, died at a local care facility in The Dalles on Monday, Nov. 7, 2005. He was born in Port Angeles, Wash., on March 3, 1923, the third of six children to Henry and Cora Bell Christilaw. He was raised in Tacoma, Wash., where he graduated from High School. He then joined the National Guard until he enlisted in the Army where he served during World War II. He participated in battles in the Aleutian Islands and Europe where he was wounded in Belgian during the Battle of the Bulge, where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He returned back to the states to recover at Madigan Hospital in Tacoma, Wash., where he met his future wife Harriet Beatrice Phares. They were married on Oct. 20, 1945 in Walla Walla, Wash. They settled in the Portland area working in the milk industry. He went to Lewis and Clark College to receive his degree. After college he went to work for the Crown Zellerbach Company as a manager of the billing department. Over the years he lived in Oregon City, West Linn and Portland area, retiring in the late seventies. After he retired he dabbled in the Real Estate Business. He was a member of the Clackamas Deputy Sheriffs Reserve, the American Legion of Oregon City Post #5, the VFW, Order of Purple Heart, Elks and Civil Air Patrol, he enjoyed working with the boy scouts and other organizations involving children. He is survived by his three children, Penny Deurwaarder and her husband David, Wamic; Paul Christilaw and his wife Clara, Cheney, Wash.; and Phil Christilaw and his wife Mel, Tacoma, Wash.; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; his sister Rosie Casey, Norwalk, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers and two sisters. Private cremation was held at Win-Quatt Crematory in The Dalles, OR with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at Willamette National Cemetery with Pastor Stan Wall residing. Memorials may be made to Oregon Veterans’ Home Trust Fund, 700 Veteran Drive, The Dalles, OR 97058.
