He was born in Maupin on Oct. 25, 1922, the older of two children of Cecil M. and Alice (Etchells) Chastain. He was raised on the family farm on Oak Springs Fish Hatchery Road and graduated from Maupin High School in the class of 1940. He entered the U.S. Army Air Cadet Corp in March 1944 and received an honorable discharge in October 1945. After the war, he returned to farming with his family on the lower Juniper Flat area. He married Gene Y. Brown from Portland on Sept. 12, 1948 and together they remodeled a farmhouse where they lived and raised their family for 46 years before moving to Tygh Valley in 1994. He had past affiliations with Wapinitia Cattle Association, Oregon Cattleman’s Association, Lone Pine Grange, Maupin American Legion, Wasco Co. Soil and Water Conservation District, Juniper Flat Improvement District and District 84 School Board. He enjoyed elk, deer and antelope hunting, fly or steelhead fishing on the Deschutes River, riding for cattle in the mountains and later on flying. He is survived by Gene his wife of 55 years; their sons, Joel (Jody), Tom and Niesa and their family: Allen, Stephanie and Macyla Stevenson; Robert Schiewe; Brian Chastain and fiancée Trishia Drago; Jodi Lynn Chastain; Mike, Pat and Cindy and their family: Jason, Chaylene and Cierra Chastain; Blake Chastain; Sandy Haws; Brenda Norton and her family: Travis and Ryan Hubbard , Mandy, Megan and Mary Hutcherson; his sister Elizabeth J. (Betty Jo) and James Paulson and their families; Russell and Marilyn Paulson; Karen Jo Paulson; Jerry Lee and Mary Paulson; Lisa Chastain; and Bernice Chastain. He was preceded in death by his father Cecil in 1958 and his mother Alice in 1987. A celebration of life will be held at a date to be announced. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to South Wasco County Ambulance, P. O.
