He was born Aug. 27, 1925 in Guntersville, Ala. to Hunter and Mary Esther (King) Chandler and grew up there. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1946 and served with the 81st Airborne Squadron. Following his military service he worked as a master machinist for the Superior Coach Co. in Michigan and Ohio as well as several shipyards in the south before moving to Oregon in 1986. He joined the family of his chosen companion Dorothy O’Dell in Hood River in 1989. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting, doing volunteer work in his community, especially with the Odell Lions Club, playing with his dog, Maggie, and his several cats, and flower and vegetable gardening. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 105 in Hood River and American Legion Post 22 and the United Steelworkers of America in addition to the Odell Lions club. He is survived by his children; daughter Mildred Snodgrass and her husband Ray of Tennessee; son, John Milford Chandler and his wife Louise of Texas; brothers Tom and his wife Florence of The Dalles, Alvin and his wife Edna of Parkdale, Clay and his wife Beulah of Indiana, Ray and his wife Doris of Tennessee; sisters Doris and her husband Harold Bradford, and Sarah and her husband James Parton, his grandchildren, Tammy Hale, Dorothy Joannes Snodgrass of Tennessee, Lori, Erica, Jay, and Jessica of Texas; great-grandchildren Megan of Tennessee, Laci, Kelly, and Kaela of Texas, as well as several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his companion Dorothy A. O’Dell and her family; sons Micheal D. and James R. O’Dell, and grandchildren James D. and his wife Victoria O’Dell and Casandra O’Dell. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother and sister, J.W. and Clara. A celebration of life luncheon will be held at the Odell Odd Fellows Lodge on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and the family will observe private ceremonies of remembrance in conjunction with the placement of his ashes. Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Scholarship Fund, c/o Hood River Lodge #105, A.F.&A.M. or to the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, c/o Odell Lions Club, P.O. Box 1, Odell, OR 97044. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial in The Dalles.
