"Nick" Carter, 80, died Feb. 19 in The Dalles. He was a long time resident of Dufur. Mr. Carter was born March 16, 1907. He was a mechanic with Sunset Motors for over 20 years. Mr. Carter was also a member of Eagles 2126 and American Legion #114, Veteran of WWII, and served with the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife Hattie of Dufur; three daughters, Jayne Goodwin of Cresent, Ore., Betty Vance of The Dalles, and Joanne Turner of The Dalles; brother, Wayne Carter of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Nila Van Hollen of Chetek, Wisc., Ethel Oldfield of Eagle River, Wisc.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Mel Gard, Jon McCurdy, Harold Armstrong, Gerald Sigman, Dallas Reddaway, DeWayne Lowe and Leonard Olson. Funeral services were held Feb. 23 at Smith Callaway Chapel with graveside interment at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Asa Jenson. The family suggests those who wish donate to a favorite charity.
