Carter, 60, a resident of Crooked River Ranch, died in Redmond on Monday, July 18, 2005 following a lengthy illness. He was born April 20, 1945 in Silverton to Elton and Thelma (Sawyer) Carter. He grew up in Portland and after high school he joined the Marines, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He lived in the Wasco County area from 1970 to the late 1990s and while there he worked several years for Mt. Fir Lumber Co. and then for Weatherly Printing in Hood River where he was lead print man. For the past three years he lived in Central Oregon and was active in Oregon Vets High Desert Eagles Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed helping others, also his horses and fishing. Survivors include sons Jonathan Carter, Bend; and James Carter Jr., Salem; daughter, Lisa Ashley, Bend; stepdaughter, JoLyn Schott, Tualatin; a brother, Harold Carter, Maupin; sisters, Coreen Riegel, Damascus; and Mazie White, Eagle Creek; and six grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at Immanuel Valley View Cemetery in Silverton on Saturday, July 30, at 1 p.m. Autumn Funerals of Redmond is in care of arrangements.
