She was a resident of The Dalles for the last year, formerly of Portland. Miss Carlson was born Jan. 23, 1904 in Minot, N.D. She received her bachelor of arts degree at Minor State College in North Dakota in 1931, later adding a masters in 1942 and doctorate in 1948, both from University of Washington. In 1952, she received the Ray Hughes Whitbeck Award for the best article in the Economic Geography Magazine written in a five-year period. She taught for one year at U of Washington as a geography instructor, later moving to Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where she was an associate professor. She retired in June 1970 as department chairman of geography. Miss Carlson traveled througout Africa, the Middle East, Western Mediterranean countries and Europe. She was the author of numerous profession magazine articles and books. She is survived by many nieces and nephews including Mary Ann Meyer of The Dalles and Fred Schlichting of Tacoma. No public funeral services will be held. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
