Byers Jr., 81, a resident of The Dalles for 42 years, died at the Oregon Veterans Home on Monday, Nov. 7, 2005. He was born on July 30 1924, in Osceola, Neb., the older of two children to Dr. William LeRoy and Edna (Schweitzer) Byers. He was raised in Wakefield, Neb., where he graduated from Wakefield High in 1941. He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He went to college at Wayne State Teachers College, graduating in 1948. He then attended University of Colorado, graduating in 1956 with his Masters of Music Education. He was a member of Alpha Psi Omega, a drama fraternity. He was accepted into Juilliard, but due to his love for the outdoors and children he moved out west to pursue a career in teaching. He married Yvonne Hanson on August 2, 1959, in Longview, Wash. During his teaching career he taught high school and Jr. high at Wahtonka, focusing on music, modern problems, driver’s education and directing high school concerts, musicals and plays. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Cascade Singers. He loved hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening, playing bridge, traveling, the Portland Trailblazers, Nebraska football, classical music and opera. He performed with the Cascade Singers, directed the Zion Lutheran Choir and was held in high esteem as a vocalist in the community. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Yvonne Byers; his son, Jeff Byers and his former daughter-in-law, Barbara Byers of Vancouver, Wash.; and their children, Dustin, Michaela and Teri Jo; his daughter JoRene and his son-in-law Terry Dorvinen of Powell Butte. Memorial services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Dorthy Nielsen officiating. Private cremation was held at Win-Quatt Crematory in The Dalles with inurnment of cremains at IOOF Cemetery. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran, Music and Youth Programs, 101 West 10th, The Dalles, OR 97058.
