Butler, 85, died at his home in Bend on July 14, 2004 of complications of cancer and lung disease. He was born Nov. 15, 1918 in Redmond. His honors and memberships include Eagle Scout, Distinguished Unit Badge, Air Medal, American Defense Medal, two Bronze Stars, WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Service Medal and life membership in the National Ex-POWs. He developed and patented the first chemical closed loading system to meet California Department of Ag specifications, developed and patented a returnable pesticide container; developed, manufactured and sold the ASC Rotary spray nozzle. He was awarded the “Big Jock” award by the Pacific Northwest Aerial Applications Association for 45 years of service to the industry and was inducted into the National Agriculture Aviation “Hall of Fame.” He was awarded lifetime membership in the PNWA in 1991 for many years of service to the industry. He was also a member of the Theta Chi fraternity at Oregon State and was member of the Quiet Birds of Bend/Redmond. Survivors include his wife, Naideen Butler; three children, Jean Keenan, Sisters; June Jaeger Lindsay, Prineville; and Judi Cobb, Dalhart, Texas; three step children, Marcia Thompson, Moro; James Medler, Carson, Wash.; and Dean Medler, Payette, Idaho; nine grandchildren and one great grandson. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 24, at Butler Aircraft at Roberts Field at the Redmond Airport. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army of Bend or the Bend or Redmond Boys and Girls Club.
