Wakley iwakley@msn.com December 31, 2006, 1:46 pm The Dalles Chronicle, September 19, 2006 Wilma Venita Betschart, 88, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local care facility, Monday, Sept. 18, 2006. She was born Jan. 19, 1918 in Pomona, Kan., the only child of William W. and Blanch M. (Steele) Apgar. She graduated from Ottawa University in Kansas with a business administration degree. She met and married Glenn James Betschart during her college years. They moved to The Dalles in 1948. Until her retirement she worked for The Dalles Lumber and Manufacturing Company and Eastern Oregon Hospital in The Dalles, as a medical and executive secretary for many years. In later years she enjoyed working in her garden and with her flowers. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in The Dalles. Throughout her life she was an active member of various social, community and professional organizations. She was a longtime volunteer with the Wasco County Humane Society. She and Glenn had three sons, twins, Ron and Russell, and Steve Betschart. She had a passion for classical music and was trained in both the violin and piano. Her love of family and her home were well-known in the community. Her husband Glenn was a respected orchestra conductor and teacher for many years at The Dalles High School. She is survived by sons Russell Betschart, The Dalles; his daughters Doreen and her husband Gary Oberg, of Ontario; and U.S. Army Captain Jenine Betschart, Greenbrae, Calif.; Ronald and his wife Phyllis Betschart, The Dalles; Steve and his wife Karen Betschart, Dallas; their daughters Annette and her husband Shawn King, Tualatin; and Jenniffer Betschart, Fairbanks, Alaska; their son Matthew Betschart, Aumsville; and great grand daughter Kimbraly Smith, Portland; her close friends and caregivers. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. At the request of the deceased there will be a private, family only, graveside services at the IOOF Parklawn Cemetery on Threemile Road at a later date. Remembrances may be made to the charity of choice or to Cat Link and Columbia Gorge Cat Rescue, Inc., 1812 Mt. Hood Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
